An intriguing Arthurian find is unearthed near Glastonbury by well-funded and media-aware archaeologist Michael Gift and his team. The discovery prompts Gillian Magwilde to risk her reputation, friendships and even her life on a quest for her deepest obsession Excalibur, the greatest sword in history.
When Kevin Shaffer, who tipped off the team about the find, is found dead, Gillian is keen to solve the mystery that drove her mother, Karen, mad. But she ends up sacking Viv and pushes Gregory away after ignoring his warnings about the man who's been trying to contact her, Henry Timberdyne, and mysterious cult the Disciples of Good Use.
The Disciples played a part in her mother's mental problems and Gillian experiences visions of a younger Karen and a man with a white mask. Gillian pushes Ben away and, after Gift is found dead, Gillian turns to Professor Mastiff to help her decode her mother's research on Tennyson's Arthurian poetry in an attempt to solve the riddle once and for all.
