What You Should Know

Use our quick guide to the Digital Switchover to help you through the biggest change to UK television for decades. After the switchover any analogue TVs (they can only receive BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and five) will be useless unless they have been converted to receive digital signals.

Our guide walks you through:

If you've got Freeview, Virgin (or any other cable service), BT Vision or Sky, you've already converted, but you may have analogue sets in the spare room, and they won't work unless they have been converted too.

The process has already started and in 2008, the first region (Whitehaven in Cumbria) will be fully digital. It will take until 2012 to convert the entire UK.

What is Digital TV?

With digital TV, sound and pictures from the broadcaster are converted into a digital code and sent through an aerial, satellite, telephone line or cable. This digital signal is then turned back into sound and pictures by a digital box (for example a Freeview or Sky box) or a digital television set.

Do not confuse "Digital TV" with High Definition (HD). To receive HD channels you must have an HD ready TV and subscribe to special HD channels.

How to Switch to Digital TV

If you only have analogue TV you need to plan what to replace it with. Use the Digital Switchkit at the Digital UK website to help you decide how to get your digital TV signal. Your options are: aerial, satellite dish, cable, phone line or combined aerial and phone line. Digital UK has plenty of help and advice.

What Digital TV Costs

This is down to your choice of service and equipment. You can spend as little or as much as you like depending on if you want to pay a montly fee or a one-off payment and on how many TV sets you intend to convert.

The payment options are:

1. One-Off Charge and Free Services

There are two free services, Freeview and Freesat, and both of them involve a one off payment for equipment.

There is also a new service launching soon, confusingly called Freesat, which also involves a one-off payment and includes a High Definition service. See the section below.

Freeview
Freeview costs between £20 and £70 for the set-top box. (You will need one for each TV set you are converting). You may also need a new aerial (which could cost between £80 and £120.)
Freesat from Sky
Currently free channels are available via a Sky dish. You may pay £150 for the installation, standard set-top box and mini-dish. You have to pay this for each TV set you decide to convert.
Freesat
A one-off payment for the digital box, satellite dish and installation. This service, a joint venture between the BBC and ITV, is a brand new digital satellite TV service offering free HD TV programming at no extra cost. Freesat has no monthly subscription, just a one-off payment for the digital box, satellite dish and installation.

2. One-Off Fee Plus Monthly Subscription

BT Vision and Top Up TV both offer "mixed" options for digital TV, with a one-off set-up charge and then additional optional subscriptions.

BT Vision
There is a one-off £30 set-up charge plus a subscription (from £8.95 per month) for BT Total Broadband. You will receive the Freeview channels and access to a library of films, sports and music channels on pay-per-view or subscription basis.
Top Up TV
You pay £99 for the Top Up TV recorder. You may require a new aerial (£80 - £120). You have the option to upgrade by subscribing to Top Up AnytimeTV and Setanta (these are paid-for services). You will need a Top Up box for every set you intend to convert. You will receive the Freeview channels and programmes from Pay-TV channels.

3. Monthly Subscription

Sky and Virgin are the main companies offering subscription services.

Sky
Standard installation by Sky engineers costs £30. Sky services cost between £16 and £45 depending on which package you choose. The standard Sky digital box and mini-dish are free, but Sky+ costs £149. Sky High Definition is £299 and Sky multiroom is £10 per month for each TV set.
Virgin
You will need a Virgin phone line (from £11 per month). TV packages range from £11 to £10.50. The set-top box is free but there is an optional paid-for installation (£25) available. To record, you need a V+box (costs £150) and there is a £5 per month subscription. Virgin multiroom costs £9.50 per month each TV set.
